Praise for this book

A very interesting prequel to the upcoming vampire zombie novel (or maybe series).

Trisha is the daughter of Dracula. Vlad was killed when he slipped into going full feral and villagers did what villagers do.

Trisha has escaped that fate. She has created a number of progeny and has devoted much of her time to killing those vampires who have gone rogue before they cause problems and kick off more widespread vampire hunts.

Vampires in this can eat food but must drink blood, although animal blood will often suffice. They must be nocturnal (and so have a serious weakness), they are stronger and faster than humans, but do not have any of the more magical gifts in some mythos. Basically, this is an infection and medical model of vampirism. The vampire stays locked in at the physical appearance of the age he or she was turned.

The part of the book I really liked was that the impact of centuries on the psychology was explored. It is hard to keep enmity going when you have known someone for hundreds of years -- even when you were leading opposite sides in a war in which many mutual friends were killed.

I am looking forward to the first book in the series.
